Awning Windows in Tulsa, OK

Hinged at the top, an awning window opens out from the bottom. The open sash sheds water like a small roof, so you can leave it cracked in a light rain.

Where they fit

Awnings are usually wider than they are tall, so they suit spots a standard window can’t: high on a bathroom wall for light and air without a view in, above a kitchen counter, or in a row under a big picture window, where the large glass stays clear and the awnings do the venting.

Where they get in the way

Because the sash swings out at the bottom, it needs clear space outside. Over a deck, a patio or a walkway, an open awning can end up at head height; under an eave, it’s out of the way. The hinges carry the sash’s weight, so the frame has to be level and square or the bottom corners won’t close evenly.

Crank, locks and glass

A crank opens it, so a window set high doesn’t take a long reach. Multi-point locks are available and help a wide sash seal evenly. Dual-pane Low-E glass suits most homes; triple-pane is available.

Common questions

Can I leave an awning window open in the rain?

In a light rain, usually yes: the open sash sends water away from the opening. When a storm brings wind-driven rain, close it like any other window.

Awning or casement?

Both crank open outward. An awning is hinged at the top and suits wide, short openings; a casement is hinged on the side and suits tall ones. We install both.

Where does the screen go on a window that opens outward?

On the inside. Crank-out windows take their screen on the room side, with the crank below it, so you never touch the screen to open the window.
