The crank makes them easy to open where you can’t reach to push a sash: over a kitchen sink, behind a counter, above a tub. Opened wide, the sash scoops in a side breeze. Closed, it presses into the weatherstripping instead of sliding past it, so a casement tends to leak less air than a sliding or hung window.

Are casement windows more efficient than other styles?
Often, yes. The sash presses into the seal when it closes, so it tends to leak less air than a sliding or double-hung window installed just as well.
Can a casement go over a sink or counter?
That’s one of the most common places for one. The crank sits at the bottom of the frame, so there’s no long reach.
Do I need triple-pane glass in Oklahoma?
